A speeding driver whose passenger died in a three vehicle crash in Edinburgh has been jailed for three years.

Darren Luke, 30, was told by the judge at the High Court in Edinburgh he had caused "inestimable damage" to the family of Billy Casement.

Mr Casement, 30, from Edinburgh, died after Luke's Subaru Impreza hit a car and a van as he drove on the wrong side of the road on 7 March 2012.

Luke had been driving at 70mph in a 40mph zone near Maybury roundabout.

A jury earlier found him guilty of causing death by dangerous driving.

Best friend

Offshore worker Frank Ballantyne, 48, from East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, was injured when Luke's car hit his van, leaving it a write-off.

"I thought I was dead," he told a trial.

Luke, from Edinburgh, was pulled from his car with smashed ribs, a fractured pelvis and other injuries.

Luke's solicitor, advocate Simon Whyte, said as well as the physical injuries Luke had suffered panic attacks and depression since the accident.

Mr Casement was someone he described as his best friend, said the lawyer.

Sentencing Luke, judge Lord Brodie noted that Mr Casement had left a wife and two young children.

"Your dangerous driving has had the effect of taking away one life but has also caused inestimable damage to the lives of other people," he said.

Luke, who has a previous conviction for speeding 10 years ago, was also banned from driving for five years.

Lord Brodie said neither of the other two drivers had done anything to bring about the collision.
