Police are investigating a suspicious fire in Edinburgh.

Several residents were trapped inside a block of flats in Craigmillar after a blaze was started in the first-floor corridor just before 22:00 on Monday.

Firefighters had to issue fire survival guidance over the phone to those stuck inside the high rise, Craigmillar Court in Craigmillar Castle Gardens.

No one was injured. However, there was smoke damage caused to the landing. Police are appealing for witnesses.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Police in Edinburgh are investigating following a suspicious fire in Craigmillar Court.

"The incident happened around 21:55 on Monday 9 September within a common stair.

"No one was injured. However, there was minor smoke damage caused to the landing.

"Officers are now conducting local enquiries to trace those responsible and anyone with information that can assist with their investigation is asked to come forward immediately."
