Almost 60 firefighters were called out to a large blaze at a derelict community centre in the Wester Hailes area of Edinburgh.

The alarm was raised at 20:21 after the fire broke out in the single-storey prefabricated building at the former Hailesland Place Community Centre.

Four appliances were sent to the scene and a high water platform used.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said there was a large amount of black smoke in the area.

The fire had broken through the roof of the building but it was empty and there were no casualties, she added.

A large crowd was said to have gathered in the area to watch and a helicopter was seen flying overhead.

An Edinburgh City Council spokeswoman said: "A fire occurred last night in a disused council building which was formerly the Hailesland Place Community Centre.

"When the emergency services have completed their activities we will assess the damage and take measures to ensure that the site is safe."
