Pensioner charged over Musselburgh child abduction attempt

A pensioner has been charged in connection with an attempt to abduct a child in a supermarket car park.

The 72-year-old man was arrested after the incident outside Tesco Extra in Musselburgh, East Lothian.

The man, driving a red car, reportedly spoke to a 10-year-old girl before taking hold of her at about 12:40 on Friday.

Police said he drove off after a member of the public intervened.

The man is expected to appear at Haddington Sheriff Court on Monday.

Det Ch Insp Kenny Gray said: "Thankfully the child was not harmed during the incident."

Police have appealed for witnesses to contact them.
