CCTV images of a man and a woman have been released by police probing a serious assault on a 23-year-old cab driver last Christmas.

The incident happened in Edinburgh city centre at about 02:45 on 22 December.

The private hire driver had dropped a passenger near the junction of St Andrews Square and George Street before the attack.

He was punched on the head after the couple got into his silver Skoda Octavia estate.

They demanded to be taken to Cameron Toll.

Facial injury

The driver suffered a serious facial injury and had to be treated at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

The man was of muscular build and wearing a tight fitted T-shirt with a pink and green logo. The woman was wearing an orange and black strapless dress. Both were white.

Officers are keen to trace the couple as part of their investigation.

Det Con James Philp said: "The male and female pictured in the CCTV are of interest to our inquiries and anyone who can assist officers in tracing them is asked to contact police immediately. Similarly, anyone with any other information relating to this incident is also asked to come forward."
