An elderly pedestrian has died after being hit by a council van in Fife.

Police said the woman was struck by the local authority vehicle in Dalgety Bay at about 10:30.

She was pronounced dead at the scene. The van driver was not injured but has been taken to hospital for a check-up.

The accident happened in the town's Moray Way North. Police are advising motorists to avoid the area as road closures are in place.

Grant Ward, Fife Council's head of leisure and cultural services, said: "I can confirm that one of our vehicles was involved in a road traffic accident earlier today.

"The incident is the subject of an ongoing police investigation so, unfortunately, I'm not in a position to offer any further comment at this stage."
