Man dies after being found in New Town lane

A man has died in Edinburgh after being found unconscious in a New Town street.

Police said the man, who is understood to be in his 30s, was discovered in a lane off Cumberland Street at 05:00.

He was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary but died a short time later. A police operation is now under way at the scene.

A spokesman for Police Scotland said the man's death was currently being treated as unexplained. Cumberland Street is closed.

Det Insp Neil Spowart said: "We are working to establish the circumstances leading to the discovery of the man, and we are keen to hear from any local residents who may have information that can assist our inquiries.

"Anyone who was in the area of Cumberland Street at about 05:00 on Friday, who saw or heard anything suspicious or unusual, should contact police immediately."
