A man who police believe is the driver who fled the scene of a fatal crash in West Lothian on New Year's Day has been traced.

A Vauxhall Signum left the B7015 Sheephousehill Road, near Fauldhouse, and hit a tree at about 19:45.

Front seat passenger, Stefan Sakatiuk, 34, from Fauldhouse, died in the crash.

Lothian and Borders Police said on Friday that a man had been traced. The force is still appealing for witnesses to the crash to come forward.

The development came a day after Mr Sakatiuk's family appealed for the driver to turn himself in.

Stefan's father and two brothers said in a statement: "It is a terrible shock to the whole family. Stefan was a much loved son and brother, who especially loved his mum.

"We would like to be left alone to grieve and hope the driver does the right thing and hands himself in.

"Stefan will be dearly missed and we cannot believe that this has happened."
