A woman who put an Edinburgh shop worker in a headlock and her accomplice who hit him in the face are being sought by police.

The incident happened at 13:05 on Boxing Day in an RS McColl shop in West Maitland Street.

A 21-year-old man was working alone when a woman entered and approached him from behind before putting him in a headlock and demanding money.

A man who had been keeping lookout then hit him in the face.

Both attackers then made off empty handed towards Haymarket.

'Left shaken'

Officers are now urging witnesses to come forward.

The woman is white, between 35 and 40 years old, 5ft 9ins tall with a skinny build and freckled face.

She was wearing a dark top, light-coloured hat, dark grey trousers and white shoes.

The male attacker is white, between 30 and 40 years old, 5ft 11ins tall, of medium to stocky build.

He was wearing a black and white top, dark trousers, dark footwear and a green and white scarf covering his face.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: "The shop assistant was not serious injured as a result of this attack, but was nevertheless left shaken.

"Given the time of day this incident occurred and the high-volume of people shopping in the city centre on Boxing Day, there were potentially a number of witnesses, who may have seen the suspects flee the store.

"Anyone who recognises their description or can assist officers in identifying them is asked to contact police immediately."
