Hibs fan in one-year match ban for assault

The incident involving Chris Whitton took place during a Hearts v Hibs match at Tynecastle

A Hibernian supporter has been banned from all regulated UK football matches for a year for assaulting a security supervisor at an Edinburgh derby match.

Chris Whitton, 20, from Edinburgh, spat on the man at the Hearts v Hibs match at Tynecastle Stadium in August 2011.

Whitton was given a 150 hour community payback order and a one-year football banning order at Edinburgh Sheriff Court.

He was convicted on 18 September 2012 and sentenced on Wednesday.

Faith Millar, the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service's football liaison prosecutor for the east of Scotland, said: "I am sure the prosecution service will have the full support of true football fans in our commitment to help drive out supporter violence in any form from football matches.

"The vast majority attend matches across the country to enjoy the game. I hope that the small minority who resort to violence will take heed of our robust action and our zero tolerance warning".
