Child data concern over theft of foster worker's laptop

The police believe the computer's information was not targeted by the thieves

An investigation has been launched after a laptop containing details on Edinburgh children was stolen from a fostering and adoption panel member.

The machine was stolen from the home of an independent consultant in August. The computer contained a number of minutes from meetings of these panels.

The council said it had contacted almost all of the families involved.

An Edinburgh City Council spokeswoman said the police advised the computer had probably been wiped by the thieves.

She added: "However, we won't take any chances even when there is a low risk of individuals being identified.

"We have contacted the vast majority of those involved and have apologised for any concern this may cause them.

"We're working with our external advisers to stress the importance of information security and to make sure that they take all necessary security measures when carrying out work for us."

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesperson said: "Police are following a positive line of inquiry following a housebreaking at an address in the south east of Edinburgh that took place in August this year.

"Inquiries are ongoing, and anyone with any information is asked to contact Lothian and Borders Police."
