Diver found in difficulty off Fife coast dies

An investigation has been launched by police into the death of a diver off the coast of Fife.

The man in his 50s was found 13 miles off the coast from Fife Ness at about 14.30 on Sunday.

He was taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee but later died. He had been on a diving trip which had set off from Eyemouth in the Scottish Borders.

A helicopter from RAF Boulmer and lifeboat crews from Dunbar and Anstruther were involved in the rescue.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: "We are investigating the sudden death of a man in his 50s after he took ill during a diving trip.

"The man was taken to Ninewells Hospital after members of his group raised the alarm.

"However, despite the best efforts of medical staff, he later passed away."

He added: "Inquiries are ongoing into the full circumstances surrounding this death."
