Lift system revamp for Edinburgh's Waverley Station

The lifts were opened by Transport Minister Keith Brown

Commuters can access Edinburgh's Waverley Station without using steps from Princes Street for the first time in the busy rail hub's history.

New lifts were opened by Transport Minister Keith Brown, marking the completion of the 18-month Waverley Steps Improvement Project.

Two 16-person lifts take people from the roof of the Princes Mall into the station.

There is already a covered escalator at the Princes Street end.

David Simpson, Network Rail route managing director for Scotland, said: "The 'Windy Steps' have been given a vital upgrade and are now accessible and convenient for all passengers.

"The project proves our commitment to create a modern facility that is respectful of Waverley Station's historical significance but satisfies the requirements of the modern traveller, and we look forward to the final completion of the station works as a whole."
