Hall's of Broxburn closure: Union to meet bosses

The workforce at Halls of Broxburn faces an uncertain future

The union Usdaw has said it hopes to learn more about the finances of the Hall's of Broxburn factory during a meeting with management.

The West Lothian pork-processing plant is under threat of closure. About 1,700 people work there.

Owners Vion, a Dutch food company, have said the factory is losing £79,000 a day.

A 90-day consultation period will take place before a final decision is made on the plant's future.

On Tuesday, West Lothian councillors held an emergency meeting on the threat to Hall's of Broxburn.

The council said it was pressing for a "full explanation" of how the factory came to be under threat and called on Vion to explore "every option" to save it.

Usdaw official Stewart Forrest said: "We may get some understanding as to why the factory is losing so much money.

"Our members say the factory is working hard, people are working overtime.

"Agency workers are being brought in and the order books are full."
