Edinburgh child porn pensioner jailed

An Edinburgh pensioner caught with images of children being abused has been jailed for 10 months.

Alexander Penman, 66, was arrested after police caught him using software to download indecent photos.

He had 1,158 photographs and 14 films showing boys aged between six and 16 being abused.

He pleaded guilty to having the material between January 2008 and April 2011 at an earlier hearing.

Penman was caught during a raid on his home in April 2011.

Sentence had been deferred at Edinburgh Sheriff Court for background reports.

Passing sentence, Sheriff Maciver said he wanted to impose a sentence that would deter anybody else tempted to download material showing children being abused.

He said: "I want the people who read or hear about this case to realise that this court won't tolerate offences of this nature."

The sheriff also ordered Penman be placed on the sex offenders register for five years.
