Hibs footballer Garry O'Connor cleared of Ferrari crash fraud

Scotland striker Garry O'Connor has been cleared of attempting to defraud his insurance company over a £93,500 claim on his crashed Ferrari.

The 28-year-old Hibernian player, who denied the charge, was found not guilty at Haddington Sheriff Court.

He was said to have told an Aviva Insurance rep he struck a deer while driving his red Ferrari in Gullane, East Lothian, on 30 April 2011.

But it was alleged that a friend had crashed the car two weeks earlier.

Case withdrawn

However, the case was withdrawn by the Crown Office on Friday.

A spokeswoman said: "It is the duty of the Crown to keep cases under review.

"After full and careful consideration of the evidence led in this case, it was determined that there was now insufficient evidence to prove the offence beyond reasonable doubt."

Sheriff Braid told Mr O'Connor: "You have been found not guilty. You are free to leave the court."

Last week, the striker was convicted of possessing cocaine and obstructing police at a separate trial at Edinburgh Sheriff Court.

Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard he was approached by police in the city on 14 May 2011 after they spotted him taking drugs in the back of a car.

However, he fled police after giving them a false name, only to be caught a few hundred metres away. He is due to be sentenced on 29 June.
