Sandbag thrown from George IV Bridge in Edinburgh

Police are appealing for witnesses after a sandbag was thrown from a bridge in Edinburgh, narrowly missing pedestrians below.

The 10kg bag was thrown from George IV Bridge into the Cowgate at about 00:30.

Police are hoping witnesses come forward to give them details of the "mindless act of criminal recklessness".

Kate Flannery, 24, from Galway, was injured by a traffic cone thrown from the bridge in 2006.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: "This was a mindless act of criminal recklessness, the consequences of which could have been very severe, and it is only by good fortune that no-one was seriously injured.

"We want anyone who witnessed the sandbag being thrown from George IV Bridge about 00:30 to contact police immediately, similarly, anyone else who has any information that can assist our inquiries should also get in touch."
