A woman who died while walking along a road on the outskirts of Edinburgh may have been hit by more than one vehicle, police have said.

Vanessa Miller, 36, was hit on the A90 city-bound carriageway just before the South Queensferry turn off, near the Cramond Brig Hotel, on Tuesday.

Lothian and Borders Police believe Ms Miller had walked from Barton towards Kirkliston between 18:00 and 19:40.

She was wearing a black leather jacket with a fur collar, jeans and boots.

Officers are investigating the possibility that Ms Miller was hit by more than one vehicle and have appealed for any drivers with information to get in touch.

Stormy night

Insp David Milne, of Lothian and Borders Police, said: "It is possible that a driver may be aware that they have struck something or someone on the road, and might only realise they have if they check their vehicle closely for damage.

"It was a particularly cold stormy night, so people may have thought it was unusual for a woman to be out walking this stretch of road at that time.

"I would appeal for anyone who was on the A90 between 18:00 and 19:40 on Tuesday and who may have any information about this incident to contact police, if they have not already done so, to allow us to piece together exactly what has happened in these tragic circumstances."

The road was closed for about nine hours on Tuesday for investigations, and a driver who stopped at the scene to help the injured woman was helping with inquiries.
