Edinburgh police probe 'suspicious death' in Merchiston

Police in Edinburgh are investigating a suspicious death, after the discovery of a man's body in a property in the Merchiston area of the city.

Officers were called to the house in Merchiston Crescent at about 0500 GMT, following reports of a gas leak, and found the man's body in the hallway.

His body showed signs of injury, Lothian and Borders Police said.

The man is believed to be in his 60s, however formal identification has yet to take place.

Det Ch Insp Gareth Blair said a post-mortem examination would be carried out to establish the cause of death.

"In the meantime, we are appealing to anyone who was in the area of Merchiston Crescent overnight from Friday night into Saturday morning, who saw or heard anything suspicious, to contact police immediately," he said.

"At the moment a cordon is in place around the property, and forensic examinations are taking place at the scene.

"Extra uniformed patrols are under way in the area in order to provide reassurance to local residents, and officers are on hand to speak to anyone who has concerns about the ongoing police activity."
