Police are investigating two separate suspicious deaths in Edinburgh.

In one incident, a 45-year-old man died after a fire at a first-floor flat in Pilton Drive North just before 0230 GMT.

Police said they believed there was a disturbance at the property before the fire broke out.

Police are also investigating the death of a 44-year-old man, who had been found unconscious at flats in Salamander Street, Leith, at 0330 GMT.

Det Insp Sara Buchanan, who is leading the Leith investigation, said: "The man was discovered within the lift that services the block of flats, and was taken to hospital, where he sadly passed away.

"We are appealing to any residents who saw or heard anything suspicious within the building in the early hours of this morning to contact police, if they have not already done so."

Lothian and Borders Police officers set up a cordon around the flat in Pilton Drive North while they carried out an investigation into the fire death.

Det Chief Insp David Gordon said: "We believe that there was a disturbance at the property before the fire broke out, and we want anyone who may have seen someone entering or leaving the property in the early hours to contact police."
