A driver who was almost three times over the alcohol limit has admitted causing the death of a cyclist in West Lothian.

Andrzej Stankiewicz, 43, from Winchburgh, West Lothian, pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving, while under the influence of alcohol.

Dr Konstantinos (Kostas) Tourlas, 37, from Edinburgh, was hit by the Fiat Ulysee on the B9080, near Kirkliston Sports Centre on 12 June.

Stankiewicz will be sentenced later.

He appeared at the High Court in Edinburgh.

Mr Tourlas, who was originally from Greece but lived in Edinburgh, died at the scene.

In a statement his family said: "Today's guilty plea means that part of the drama comes to an end, however the grief we feel will remain with us forever.

"Kostas's life was taken in an especially tragic way, but we are not interested in revenge, because we believe that the value of a life is not negotiable.

"Instead we hope that what happened to Kostas serves as a warning to others of the consequences of drinking and driving.

"Finally, we would like to thank police and prosecutors for their assistance over this difficult period."

Insp Simon Bradshaw, of Lothian and Borders Police, said: "This case serves as a tragic reminder of the potential consequences of drink driving, and we hope that the outcome provides some comfort to the family of Kostas Tourlas.

"While those who drink and drive are very much in the minority, it remains essential that we continue to drive home the message that such selfish behaviour can destroy lives.

"Rest assured that Lothian and Borders Police will continue to target the minority of thoughtless motorists who take to the wheel while under the influence of drink or drugs, while at the same time educating people to the deadly consequences of such behaviour."
