Scottish independence: Jim Murphy hit by egg

29 August 2014 Last updated at 15:22 BST

Labour MP Jim Murphy was hit by an egg after being confronted by pro-independence supporters on the streets of Kirkcaldy.

The incident, which happened on Thursday afternoon, is being investigated by police.

Mr Murphy was in the Fife town as part of his 100 Towns in 100 Days tour for Better Together ahead of the referendum on Scottish independence.

The shadow international development secretary has since suspended his tour for 72 hours pending police advice.

The Yes Scotland campaign, which supports independence, called for people on both sides of the debate to respect those with different opinions.
