The Crown Office has said it will seek a retrial of three men for the murder of Surjit Singh Chhokar.

Mr Chhokar, a waiter, was murdered in Overtown, Lanarkshire, by three men almost 16 years ago.

Lawyer Aamer Anwar read a statement on behalf of the Chhokar family following a meeting with the Lord Advocate Frank Mulholland and Solicitor General Lesley Thomson: "The family were advised by the Lord Advocate that the Crown will make an application to the appeal court under double jeopardy legislation to bring fresh proceedings for murder against three men".

There were two separate trials in 1999 and 2000 when Ronnie Coulter, his nephew Andrew Coulter and David Montgomery were tried for murdering Mr Chhokar. All were acquitted.
