E. coli boy's mother calls for awareness

20 December 2013 Last updated at 09:39 GMT

A young boy has been described as the most severely affected surviving patient in Scotland of the worst strain of E. Coli.

Three-year-old Bo Cox has been left deaf, blind and needing almost daily dialysis after he caught the bug at a nursery in Aberdeenshire.

His mother Lucy is calling for better education about the bacteria. She believes that simple hand washing precautions which prevent the spread of E. Coli are not being taken seriously because many believe it is a simple sickness bug which clears up.

BBC Scotland's Kevin Keane reports.
