Man in hospital after street attack in Gourock

A man is in hospital with head injuries after being assaulted by up to five men when he got out of a taxi with a woman in Gourock.

Police said the 23-year-old became involved in an altercation with the men in their early 20s at about 01:30.

He and a 25-year-old woman were getting out of the taxi on St John's Road when the assault happened.

The man is in a stable condition in Inverclyde Royal Infirmary and the woman was slightly injured.

Det Insp George McAllister said: "Our inquiries are at a very early stage, and we are trying to establish the timeline of events that concluded in these two people being assaulted, one of them seriously.

"I would like to appeal to anyone who lives in the St John's Road area and who may have heard the altercation and witnessed it to come forward to police.

"We're continuing efforts to trace the taxi driver who dropped the couple off in the street, as he may have information that could assist us."
