Teen saved from river by helicopter

A teenager had to be winched to safety by a helicopter crew after he was swept away by a fast-flowing river.

He and a second teen were rescued from the River Irvine in North Ayrshire after a member of the public heard the pair shouting at about 19:15.

Emergency services found them trapped in the river by Gray Crescent in Irvine, holding on to tree branches.

One managed to make his way on to the bank but the other had to be winched to safety by a Royal Navy helicopter crew.

Both were taken to Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock where they were being kept overnight for observation.

It was not clear how they ended up in the river.
