Scottish independence referendum to be held on 18 September 2014

The Scottish independence referendum will take place on 18 September 2014, First Minister Alex Salmond has told MSPs.

A bill setting out the legal framework for the referendum has been introduced to the Scottish Parliament.

Mr Salmond said the date was a "historic day when the people will decide Scotland's future".
