Report: Snow disruption in Scotland

Snow has forced the cancellation of a "mass participation" opening show at the Big Burns Supper in Dumfries. Hundreds of school children from around the region had been due to congregate at the town's Midsteeple. However, organisers took the decision at 15:00 on Friday to cancel the show because of safety concerns. Director Graham Main said he understood the community would be "very disappointed" after having "worked tirelessly" to prepare for the event.

The Met Office warning across most of Scotland from the early hours of Saturday is for ice. It says: "Following clearance of snow or rain, icy stretches will form in many areas, particularly on untreated surfaces. The public should be aware of possible hazardous conditions early on Saturday."

Met Office amber warning remains in place until midnight for Central Scotland, Tayside and Fife; Strathclyde, Grampian, Highlands, south west Scotland; and Lothian and the Borders. It says snowfall will continue to spread from the west, as another weather front slides eastwards across the UK. Snow will be concentrated in Scotland on Friday afternoon, before extending to much of northern and central England during the evening, clearing towards midnight.

BBC Scotland travel summary: In Aberdeenshire the A98 is closed between Fraserburgh and Macduff, because of earlier an accident. And the A93 is closed in both directions between Braemar and the Spittal of Glenshee, because of snow. In Fife, we had a call to say that the road in and around Glenrothes are at a standstill as the snow is turning to ice on the roads. The A977 in Kinross is closed westbound because of a broken down lorry between Jct 6 of M90 in Kinross and the B9097. Getting lots of message from people stuck on the A737 in Ayrshire. Police are putting the congestion down to the snow.

Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary says it is dealing with a lot of vehicles stuck in the snow. Problems are worst in the north of region. The advice to drivers is not to travel unless absolutely necessary.

Dumfries and Galloway Council says reports indicate that the A711 is currently closed due to a jack-knifed lorry near to the Tower Wood golf centre.

Organisers of the Big Burns Supper in Dumfries say all events outside the cancelled launch should proceed as normal.

SEPA issues a warning about localised flooding on Saturday because of predicted rain and snow melt. It says: "The arrival of milder temperatures will lead to a thaw of low lying snow in many places, which will result in a rise in river levels across the country. No significant flooding is expected from larger rivers. However, some localised flooding may occur."

Scottish Borders Council is putting extra operational staff in place on Sunday in light of a heavy rain and melting snow warning. They will work to clear the grills at culverts for burns and rivers to help prevent blockages of debris such as leaves and branches.

A flood alert has been issued for Western Isles by SEPA. It said: "Very strong winds have the potential to result in large waves along western coastlines on Saturday morning, primarily along the Uist Islands. Expected impacts are primarily spray and wave overtopping. Seas are expected to remain high into next week, though no significant impacts are currently expected."

As the snow continues across much of Scotland there is now a warning from the Met Office of ice for most of the country on Saturday morning.

BBC Scotland Travel summary: The A93 has now fully re-opened, between Spittal of Glenshee and Braemar. In Fife, the A985 is still closed while emergency services recover a crane between Cairney Hill Roundabout and Rosyth . The M9 - in Falkirk - is described as just passable because of the snow between Jct 8 Hill Of Kinnaird and Jct 9 Bannockburn. There are reports of hazardous driving conditions in Stirling on the A84 between Craigforth and Doune and on the A811 between the A81 and Culbowie Road. The police say there has been a collision on the A811 near Kippen and the road is blocked both ways.

There are still significant piles of snow in many parts of the Scottish Borders.

Perth and Kinross Council has said more of its schools are closing early. Madderty Primary School is closing due to severe weather. Comrie Primary School is partially closed, it is open to local pupils. Breadalbane Academy/Primary is partially closed

Stirling Council says its local office in Callander is closed due to adverse weather conditions. The library in the town closed earlier. Two schools are closed in the Stirling council area and three more have sent pupils home if they require transport.

Twenty-five schools closed in Aberdeenshire.

Historic Scotland say a number of their sites are closed because of the bad weather. Tolquhon Castle in Aberdeenshire and Trinity House Maritime Museum in Leith are closed today (Friday) and for the weekend. Linlithgow Palace is also now closed for the day.

A number of schools have decided not to attend a planned launch event for the Big Burns Supper in Dumfries. A further group of schools is liaising with parents and bus companies prior to making a final decision. Four schools have confirmed attendance.

St Peter's RC primary in Dalbeattie joins the list of 10 school closures in Dumfries and Galloway.

In Angus, Arbirlot Primary School has closed. It is the 18th primary in the area to close. Webster's High School is partially closed and will finish early at 15:00.

Two of Saturday's Scottish Football League matches have been postponed - the Second Division clash between Brechin City and Queen of the South, and the Third Division match between Elgin City and Queen's Park.

Perth and Kinross Council says Balbeggie and Collace Primary Schools are closing at 1.30pm due to severe weather. That is 11 schools in the council area which have closed completely for the day.

@GrampianPolice: There are HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS on the B9031 west of New Aberdour due to the snow.

There are a number of problems on the roads in Moray. The A941 - Lossiemouth - Elgin - Dufftown - Rhynie Road is closed by drifting snow south of Bridgend to Cabrach. Some other routes are only passable with care.

During rush hour and the evening period snow will continue over the likes of the Rest and Be Thankful, higher parts of the M74 going south, and higher parts of the A9 and the central highlands away from coastal areas. We may well see further sleet/wet snow for Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Here's a lunchtime weather forecast: The wintry theme will continue for much of the country this afternoon, with a mixture of rain, sleet and snow. Rain will be heavy at times along coastal areas and low ground. Inland, over the high ground, snow will continue to fall for many areas, with further accumulations over the Central Highlands and parts of eastern, central and southern Scotland. There will be a fresh to strong south to south easterly wind generally, so drifting and blizzard conditions to contend with. The winds touching galeforce at times along the west coast. A generally cold feel to the afternoon.

Stirling Council says Callander Library is closed. It also says Balfron High School's main phone lines are down at the moment.

Aberdeen City Council has six schools closed or partially closed. The latest is Bucksburn Academy (including ASN Wing)

Angus Council says Cortachy Primary School is closed. It has now closed 17 primary schools.

Stirling Council has just announced that two schools have closed. McLaren High School and Trossachs Primary School.

And when the snow clears, here's something to look forward to. The Met Office has issued a Yellow alert for rain in Strathclyde, Argyll and Bute & South Ayrshire on Tuesday 29 January.

Several lorries stuck on the A90 between Perth and Dundee. They are trying to deliver huge parts of a wind turbine but cannot get to the wind farm site because of the snow.

Traffic Scotland is again warning of the Amber alert for further snowfall across much of Scotland. Its latest update adjusts the boundaries of the amber warning area, taking more of the Borders and Lothian.

A number of minor roads in the Borders closed by snow. They are the C98 beyond Longformacus towards Gifford, the B6368 Gilston road, the B709 Garvald to Innerleithen and B7007 Garvald to Middleton.

Aberdeen city has five schools closed or partially closed. It has just said Oldmachar Academy will close at the end of period five.

South Lanarkshire Council says Wiston Primary School in Biggar is closed due to adverse weather

Aberdeenshire Council said 15 schools were closed to everyone and three more were closed to pupils. It said six were affected by school transport not operating and 18 were affected by changes to transport routes.

In Perth and Kinross, Logiealmond Primary School is closing due to severe weather

In Fife, the A985 is closed in both directions at Cairneyhill roundabout. Traffic Scotland says the route is likely to remain shut for some time.

Dalbeattie High School is added to the list of school closures in Dumfries and Galloway. It is the second secondary in the region to shut, after Sanquhar Academy.

In Perth and Kinross, Fossoway Primary School is closing at 12:30 due to severe weather and Blairingone Primary School is closing at 12:45.

The first school shuts in the Borders, with pupils sent home at Newcastleton Primary.

Four nurseries/schools closed in East Ayrshire due to adverse weather - the Nursery and Family Centre at Bellsbank Primary School, Dalmellington Primary School and Nursery Class, Doon Academy and Patna/St Xavier's Primary Schools and Nursery Class

Council said a number of staff and pupils were not able to get to school and there are concerns over deteriorating travel conditions.

In Angus, Carmyllie Primary School will be closed this afternoon because of "weather/access issues". Aberlemno Primary School is also closed.

Angus Council has updated its school transport information.

Dumfries and Galloway Council says the situation regarding pupil involvement in a Big Burns Supper event planned for this evening in Dumfries is being "monitored".

In Perth and Kinross, Blairgowrie High School is closing due to severe weather

No school closures in the Scottish Borders but pupils from some outlying areas sent home.

A total of eight schools are closed in Dumfries and Galloway, mainly in the north and east of the region - Canonbie, Closeburn, Dalbeattie, Dunscore, Kelloholm, Moniaive and Sanquhar primaries and Sanquhar Academy.
