Scotland snow: Schools closed and drivers warned of disruption

Hundreds of workers have been involved in keeping roads clear

More than 150 schools have been closed and drivers were warned of dangerous conditions after further heavy snowfalls hit Scotland.

Grampian Police urged motorists to exercise extreme caution, after drifting snow overnight into Tuesday.

Met Office "be prepared" warnings remained in place in eastern, central and southern areas.

About 21:00 on Tuesday, the A9 was closed in both directions near Dunkeld, following an accident.

Police said the road was covered by snow and fresh snow was falling.

The A9 had earlier been reopened near Pitlochry after a crash which left a 70-year-old man injured.

The road was closed for several hours following a collision involving a car and a lorry. The driver of the car was taken to Ninewells Hospital, although his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

More than 30 schools were shut on Monday and on Tuesday 89 were closed in Aberdeenshire, 24 in Perth and Kinross, 16 in Angus, 13 in Moray, 11 schools and three support centres closed in the Borders - with several partial closures, four in the Highlands, one in Fife and one in West Lothian.

On the roads in the north east, some high level routes have been closed by snow and many others are only passable with care.

The A7 north of Langholm, in Dumfries and Galloway, was shut by an overturned lorry and no diversion route was available due to adverse weather conditions.

A Met Office spokesman said: "The snow should become lighter from the south during Tuesday afternoon as the winds also start to subside.

"The public should be prepared for the risk of further disruption to travel, and the likelihood of road closures, as well as possible disruption to power supplies."
