Banff shoreline search for Reece Sweeney finds body

Police and coastguard have been searching the area around the River Deveron

The body of a 16-year-old boy missing at Banff Bay has been found.

Police officers and coastguard personnel had been searching the area, in Aberdeenshire, since Reece Sweeney was swept out to sea early on Saturday.

The teenager had been swimming with two friends near the mouth of the River Deveron, when he vanished. His friends made it safely to the river bank.

Grampian Police confirmed the body had been formally identified and his family has been informed.

It is believed Reece was swept away by a wave.

Coastguard teams from Buckie, Portsoy, Banff and Gardenstown; the Macduff and Buckie RNLI lifeboats and a rescue helicopter from RAF Lossiemouth were all involved in the search operation.

Police said they are investigating the circumstances leading up to the three people being in the water.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has reminded members of the public to call 999 and ask for the coastguard if they get into difficulty on or along the coast.
