Broadcaster STV is to drop its magazine show The Hour with immediate effect after a relaunch failed to attract enough viewers.

The show had been hosted by former pop star Michelle McManus along with Tam Cowan.

It recently changed from a daily programme at teatime into a weekly show at 20:00.

The broadcaster said this week's edition would be the last but it has left the door open for it to return.

Some fans of the show had expressed their disappointment about the new peaktime format and changes to the programme's style.

Elizabeth Partyka, deputy director of channels at STV, said: "Today we have confirmed that The Hour will not be continuing for the time-being on STV.

"Television is all about taking risks and experimenting with programming and our schedule.

"On this occasion, the show isn't delivering the ratings that we expect.

"We're delighted with the performance of other STV shows including Scotland's Greatest Album and we'll be confirming plans for 2012 programming later this year."
