'Viking shipyard' found on Skye

A 12th century Norse shipyard has been discovered on the Isle of Skye, complete with boat timbers from the 1100s and a stone-built quay.

Aerial investigations revealed a small canal leading to the sea from the loch on Skye's Rubh an Dunain peninsula, at which point a marine archaeologist was brought in to explore further.

Dave Cowley from the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland said the shipyard could have supported "quite an extensive martime network".
