Labour's John McDonnell 'embarrassing' spending U-turn

14 October 2015 Last updated at 22:19 BST

Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell has admitted his 'U-turn' on a vote on the government's new spending rules is "embarrassing" but insisted that it was the right thing to do.

Speaking ahead of a Commons vote on the issue, Mr McDonnell said he had changed his mind "not on the principles of the need to tackle the deficit but on the parliamentary tactics for dealing with this charter".

MPs backed the government's new spending rules by 320 to 258 votes. Labour voted against the Charter for Budget Responsibility, but 21 of their MPs are thought to have abstained.
