23 May 2014 Last updated at 16:46 BST

The Conservatives have lost control of four councils in south Essex following voting in Thursday's local elections.

Though UKIP did not take control of any local authorities, the Tories suffered losses to UKIP in Basildon, Castle Point and Southend.

It leaves those authorities - along with Brentwood - with no overall control.

Mike Sergeant spoke to voters in Basildon about the party's surge.
