Middlesbrough Labour party membership report 'alarming'

Irregularities in the way new members were signed up for the Labour party in Middlesbrough has been described as 'alarming' in an internal report.

The investigation began after the party added more than 100 new members in the space of a few weeks.

Inquiries later revealed that some of those who were listed as having joined knew nothing of their membership, or that a subscription fee had been paid.
