6 December 2013 Last updated at 12:58 GMT

JS Mill's has been described as one of the most influential English-speaking philosophers of the 19th century and his ideas about freedom and liberty are still at the heart of political arguments today.

In a personal film, writer Toby Young explained why John Stuart Mill was his favourite philosopher, as he met Giles Dilnot outside the home where the MP lived as they spoke about his "harm principle".

This is the fourth in a Daily Politics series on political thinkers and their ideologies, which will run most Fridays in the coming months (see video links above right)
