Edwina Currie on liver and the House of Lords menu

Calves' liver must be removed from the menu in the House of Lords if it is not cooked according to the Food Standards Agency recommendations, the head of catering services has said.

Edwina Currie, a former Conservative health minister in the headlines 25 years ago over a warning about eggs and salmonella, looked at the risks of eating liver which is not thoroughly cooked.

She said the lords should be allowed to eat liver "as red, as raw, as disgusting, as you want" on their own estates, but it should be properly cooked within the House of Lords.

Lord Tebbit has complained about the new rules, which would mean he could not eat liver as raw as he liked on the Parliamentary estate.
