Budget 2013: Build houses, says CBI's John Cridland

The chancellor should signal the start of house building schemes to help the UK economy in his Budget next week, said the director general of the CBI.

John Cridland said "confidence boosting measures" were needed and building projects could start within months. He claimed "everybody gains", saying young people would get into jobs and that infrastructure is "the best way to build confidence".

Mr Cridland said the economy was flat, but that he did not think there would be a triple-dip recession. And he said he did not think there should not be any further borrowing.

Shelter chief executive Campbell Robb backed the call for more new homes.
