Autumn Statement: road, rail and broadband plans

The chancellor announced a series of road, rail and broadband schemes across the UK.

The four big road projects, costing £1bn, will see upgrading of sections the A1 between London and Newcastle, a new link from the A5 to M1, plus widening the A30 in Cornwall, and upgrading the M25 round London.

The rail projects include extending the proposed HS2 high speed line - initially running from London to Birmingham - on to West Yorkshire and the North West of England, plus loans for two London Underground schemes in the south and east of the capital.

The list of projects also included aid for up to 120,000 homes, new flood defence schemes, faster broadband in a dozen cities, plus more spending on science and further education.

He also announced new funding to be spent by devolved administrations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
