HMRC tax collection: Margaret Hodge and Jesse Norman

Paying corporation tax for some large global firms was "almost becoming voluntary" and the HMRC "needs to be tougher", says the chair of the Public Accounts Committee.

Margaret Hodge had previously clashed with bosses of Amazon, Google and Starbucks over the amount of tax they pay in the UK, and the coffee firm later announced a review of its UK tax affairs.

Conservative MP Jesse Norman said it could be "very messy and possibly dubious legal" for the Government to name and shame firms over tax issues.

He said that HMRC had gone through a "series of minor disasters" but it was regaining the "dignity and energy it had before".
