Sgt Danny Nightingale: Philip Hammond hopes for review

The defence secretary explained how he wanted some reassurance "one way or another" about the case of an SAS solder jailed for 18 for possessing a pistol he said was given to him as a gift.

Attorney General Dominic Grieve has refused to intervene in the case of Sgt Danny Nightingale, whose wife handed in a petition to Downing Street after her husband pleaded guilty, but claimed he suffered medical problems affecting his memory.

Philip Hammond reckoned an appeal was likely and said he had wanted "private advice and guidance on this particular matter" from the Attorney General.
