Lord Howard said it was time to move on from the coverage of Andrew Mitchell's alleged comments to police officers, as he told Andrew Neil: "I am sure your viewers are bored with it too."
The former Conservative leader said Labour "will try and keep it going" but he reckoned the overwhelming majority of Tory MPs backed the chief whip.
He said the matter was now "over, dealt with, done, finished".
