George Osborne seeks consensus on airport expansion

Help

Chancellor George Osborne has given his backing to an expansion of airport capacity in the south east of England.

Speaking on The Andrew Marr Show, he said that the government would seek cross-party agreement on any plans, which could include the building of a third runway at Heathrow Airport or the building of a new airport in the Thames Estuary.

Acknowledging opposition from local residents to both developments, he said "a sensible decision" about the location would need to be made.
