Balls calls for 'root and branch' reforms of banks

Help

Shadow chancellor Ed Balls has called for "root and branch" reform of the banking industry.

He told BBC One's Andrew Marr Show that top high street banks should be forced to sell off hundreds of branches, and that people should be allowed to take their account numbers when transferring banks.

Mr Balls accused the government of "foot-dragging" on the issue, although the government has said it is already working to reform finance.
