Further "high profile resignations" were predicted by Mark Field MP, who represents the City, adding it was "quite clear the Libor inquiry has a lot further to go".

He was debating Bob Diamond's decision to stand down from Barclays Bank amid interest rate manipulation allegations.

Baroness Neuberger called for a judge-led inquiry and Labour MP Chris Leslie said it was a "cathartic moment for our banking sector - a moment of reckoning".
