Andrew Mitchell has said that international aid is "a tremendous investment" for Britain's future and vowed that the UK will stand by its commitments despite financial pressures at home.

Speaking to The Andrew Marr Show, the international development secretary said that overseas aid was vital to ensure "prosperity, stability and security" for the UK.

Mr Mitchell also confirmed that ministers would push ahead with plans for legislation to enshrine the government's target of spending 0.7% of GDP on overseas aid into law.
