Nick Clegg: PM not aware of Gove plan to scrap GCSEs

Help

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has said that neither he nor the prime minister was told about Education Secretary Michael Gove's plans to scrap GCSEs in England.

Speaking to The World at One, he said that the proposal "has not been subject to a collective discussion in government".

"If Michael Gove wants to turn some of his ideas into government policy he's entirely entitled to put that forward for wider discussion," he said.

"By definition in a government if you have collective agreement, and particularly in a coalition, it requires support from all sides."
