MPs don't back Mensch local newspaper subsidy plan
Louise Mensch's call for the government to indirectly subside the local press failed to impress a panel of fellow MPs who said its problems could not be down to council-subsidised free papers alone.
The Tory MP said the regional press held councils and MPs to account, but fellow Tory Greg Clark, Labour's Stephen Twigg and Liberal Democrat Jeremy Browne showed little support for her call in a Daily Politics film.
Her local Northants Evening Telegraph is about to become a weekly paper, and she said government departments should be told to advertise in local papers.
