The inner circle of political advisers are said to be as powerful as cabinet ministers for the influence they wield on government policy.

Giles Dilnot lifts the lid on who pulls the strings behind the scenes at No 10, and why the Westminster village was so ruffled by the departure of David Cameron's closest adviser Steve Hilton in the last few days.

He spoke to the Guardian's Nick Watt and political commentator Iain Martin.
