Gerard Gibson challenge for Historical Enquiries Team

The mother of a 16-year-old boy shot dead by the Army in Northern Ireland is taking legal action against the police team that re-investigated his death.

Gerard Gibson was killed in July 1972

The case was recently re-examined by the Historical Enquiries Team (HET), a special police unit set up to help solve murders from the Troubles.

But his family claims the HET breached its duty of independence by failing to inform them that the investigation was being led by a former RUC officer.

BBC Newsline's home affairs correspondent Vincent Kearney reports.
